Introduction/Overview


The fully online Master of Arts in Literacy Development for Urban Schools program empowers teachers in urban settings to make an impact on the education of struggling readers. Coursework will focus on strategies that integrate research and theory into practice, whether it is in the classroom or at the district level. Recognizing the diversity of learning styles in the classroom, graduates of this program will gain the skill set to assess learners and adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all students. The program meets the needs of PK-12 classroom teachers nationwide and fits candidates’ demanding schedules via its fully online design.

Program Admissions Requirements


  • Graduate Application
  • Statement of Intent
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Technology Requirement Form
  • 2 sealed official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Interview with Program Director/Assistant Director
  • A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, or a 3.05 in the last 60 undergraduate units, or a 3.0 in at least 9 graduate units is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • For applicants who completed an undergraduate/graduate degree outside of the U.S.A.:
    • Transcript evaluations
    • TOEFL or IELTS minimum score
