Introduction
The Bilingual Authorization program offers candidates the opportunity to obtain a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Korean to their existing Preliminary or Clear California Multiple Subjects, Single Subject, or Education Specialist Mild/Moderate credential or concurrently as they obtain their Preliminary Credential. Candidates are recommended for Bilingual Authorization upon completing the required three 3-semester-hour courses listed below. Candidates must also pass the CSET Subtest III or approved equivalency as outlined by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
Program Outcomes
As a result of this program, candidates will:
- Analyze the philosophical and theoretical foundations of Bilingual Education
- Design standards-based lesson plans in their language of concentration (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Korean).
- Provide standards-based instruction in the target language in an elementary or secondary Bilingual classroom setting.
- Assess student learning in the target language (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Korean)
- Analyze bilingual education and biliteracy in individuals and schools
- Apply current second language acquisition theory and research to conduct research projects related to bilingual education or biliteracy development.
- Differentiate the traditions, status, and communication patterns of the culture of emphasis, as experienced in the country or countries of origin and the United States.
Program Admissions Requirements
In order to add the Bilingual Authorization to an existing credential, candidates must:
- Demonstrate language proficiency in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Korean prior to starting their Bilingual Authorization program.
- Interview with the Academic Program Director of Bilingual Education
- Complete appropriate forms as provided by program and advisor
- Online Graduate Application
- Bachelor’s Degree from a Regionally Accredited Institution
- Official Transcript from all Colleges/Universities Attended, including all Community/Junior Colleges
- Applicants who completed an undergraduate/graduate degree outside of the United States of America:
- Official Transcript Evaluation from an approved evaluation agency that details content of coursework completed, degree equivalency, and cumulative GPA
- Official Transcript still needs to be submitted along with Transcript Evaluation
- Cumulative Undergraduate GPA of 3.0, or 3.05 in the last 60 Undergraduate Units, a 3.0 in at least 9 Graduate Units, or Completion of a Request for Exception to GPA Requirement
- Applicants whose citizenship is from a country where English is not the primary language:
- TOEFL or IELTS or Duolingo English Test Minimum Scores (unless a High School Diploma or a Bachelor’s Degree was obtained in the United States)
