Overview

The Applied Developmental Psychology Minor at LMU provides students with multidisciplinary training in child development through coursework, research, and applied fieldwork. 

Key features of the program include: 

1. A multidisciplinary approach to the study of child development, and the factors that influence development. 
2. A year-long, cohort-based fieldwork practicum at the LMU Children’s Center through which students apply their coursework to the context of early childhood education. 
3. A flexible curriculum that allows students to focus their coursework to align with individual interests (e.g., health, medicine, education, psychology). 

Outcomes

• Students will use biopsychosocial and multi-disciplinary perspectives to understand and interpret child and youth development. 
• Students will learn research methods and conduct research relevant to the study of child and youth development. 
• Students will gain exposure to child and youth development through engaged learning experiences in applied contexts, such as school and community.
• Students will gain an understanding of and critical reflection on the link between content knowledge and applied practice in child and youth development. 
• Students will demonstrate information literacy regarding child and youth development. 
• Students will be exposed to career pathways related to child and youth development. 

Requirements

• Five courses are necessary to complete the minor (18-20 units). Three of those five courses are required (PSYC 1000, ADPY 2100, ADPY 3100).  
• Students who have completed PSYC 1000 are eligible to apply for the minor. Application information can be found on the minor's website. 
• During Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year, students will complete the required two-course sequence for the minor (ADPY 2100 in Fall, ADPY 3100 in Spring). 
  • ADPY 2100 and ADPY 3100 each require a year-long practicum at LMU Children’s Center, requiring 6 hours per week outside of class time in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
• Students can only take 1 lower division elective for the minor. The second elective must be upper division (or both upper division).
• Psych majors who are ADP minors must take one elective outside of Psychology.
