The Theology Minor encourages learning within the context of the multifaceted, varied, and global Catholic intellectual tradition. Rooted in this context, the Minor program values diverse approaches to questions of ultimate meaning and transcendence, and promotes ecumenical and interreligious approaches to such questions. Minors explore the complex dynamics of faith and reason, and become more critically aware, creative, responsible, and transformed persons for and with others.
Program Goal
- To maintain a challenging and current curriculum for our Minors to provide them with a solid understanding of theology and religious studies, ethical values, social justice, and spirituality.
By virtue of their Theological Studies courses, minors should:
- Identify the beliefs and practices of major religious traditions;
- Understand the richness and complexity of theological and religious traditions, especially in light of contemporary issues and diverse voices;
- Examine and evaluate critically the diverse ways in which religious beliefs and practices change across time and space;
- Integrate theological and religious questions and problems through the careful study of either a major theological or religious thinker or a major theological or religious theme.
Theology Minor Requirements
The undergraduate minor consists of 20 semester hours (5 courses).
Minors are required to take a minimum of three upper division courses (at least one of the courses has to be a 4000-level elective, and another of the courses has to be THST 4090 Major Theological and Religious Thinker or THST 4091 Major Theological and Religious Theme).
Theology Minors can choose a Generalist Track or a Specialist Track. For THST minors who wish to pursue the Specialist track, two upper-division electives (as one upper-division course can replace a required lower-division course in the minor) must now be fulfilled through two courses within a concentration (see Theology Major Specialist Track description).
