Introduction/Overview
This Undergraduate teacher preparation pathway program is designed for undergraduate students who are seeking teaching positions in grades 6-8 or 9-12 school settings that require teachers to teach in departments. The pathway fulfills all the requirements for a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential.
The following Single Subject Preliminary credentials are offered:
- Art1
- Dance (pending CTC approval)
- English1
- Mathematics (Foundational and Full1)
- Music
- Physical Education
- Science (Biology1, Chemistry, Foundational, Geosciences, and Physics)
- Social Science1
- Theatre (pending CTC approval)
- World Languages (including Spanish1)
Courses in this program are delivered in-person on the LMU campus.
Per Federal Regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), all LMU School of Education credential/licensure programs meet the California state requirements as specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and for the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences as appropriate. The institution (LMU) has not made a determination as to whether these credential, licensure, and professional preparation programs meet the requirements of states outside of California. If you are interested in practicing outside the state of California, it is recommended that you contact the respective licensing entity of that state to seek information or guidance regarding their licensure and credential requirements in advance to allow for appropriate planning.
Student Learning Outcomes
As a result of this program, candidates will:
- Teach for social justice while acting as proactive agents for all stakeholders through a sociocultural and constructive paradigm
- Exhibit professional responsibility and teacher leadership when engaging all stakeholders

- Apply developmentally appropriate instruction to support all PK-12 student learning
- Differentiate authentic assessment methods in using student data to inform instruction and assist all students
Program Admission Requirements
Students accepted into the University are not automatically accepted into the School of Education upon matriculation. Students must apply to the School of Education to enroll in the necessary coursework to earn a preliminary teaching credential. The program admission requirements are listed below.
- Complete one of the following three prerequisite courses and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher:
- EDTL 501 Policies and Practices for Inclusive Classrooms
- EDTL 502 Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Education
- EDTL 503 Effective Learning Environments
- Attend a Mandatory Application Information Session.
- Contact the School of Education Admissions Office to attend an information session. Applicants will receive an information packet that includes all application materials and instructions.
- Teacher Education Application form
- Cumulative Undergraduate GPA of 3.0, or 3.05 in the last 60 Undergraduate Units, or Completion of a Request for Exception to GPA Requirement
- Candidate Information Sheet
- 2 Letters of Recommendation
- 1 Letter from an LMU Professor
- 1 Letter that speaks to the candidate’s experience in working with children in the target age group
- Personal Statement of Intent
- 1-2 pages, double spaced, addressing the following:
- Why you want to go into teaching?
- Your personal values in reference to the School of Education’s REAL conceptual framework
- Unofficial LMU Transcript (retrieved through PROWL)
- Status of steps taken to meet the Subject Matter Competence Requirement (SMCR)
- Interview with Academic Program Director

The course requirements listed here meet the program standards required for a credential recommendation to the CTC for this academic year. The CTC’s standards are subject to change in the future. A candidate being recommended for a credential/authorization at a later year is held to the standards required by the CTC at that time and may need to take additional coursework to meet any new standards required for that credential/authorization.
Additional Credential Requirements
- All students must complete the CTC Certificate of Clearance (COC) and submit a Tuberculosis (TB) test (within the last 12 months) before receiving permission to enroll in EDTL 503 Effective Learning Environments.
- Basic Skills Requirement (BSR)
- Subject Matter Competence Requirement (SMCR)
- Student Teacher pathway candidates must meet the SMCR prior to beginning daily whole class instruction.
- Candidates in all pathways undergo an SMCR assessment within 60 days of admission.

- Candidates are eligible to use the CTC’s Secondary Passing Score option provided they are currently enrolled in LMU.
