The Accelerated Master's in Philosophy provides the opportunity for LMU undergraduate students to complete the coursework for a master's degree in Philosophy on an accelerated time frame, by beginning the work while completing the bachelor's degree. Students in the program take two 5000-level courses that are counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate requirements. Students in the program have the option of counting two additional 5000-level courses beyond those required for the bachelor's degree. This leaves six to eight of the ten required courses to complete the M.A. degree (in addition to all other requirements for the M.A., such as the oral and language exams; see “Philosophy, M.A.” in the bulletin for more details on M.A. requirements).
The learning outcomes for the Accelerated Master's in Philosophy are the same as those for the B.A. and M.A. in philosophy.
Undergraduate LMU students may apply to the Accelerated program with a letter of intent, undergraduate course transcript, and two recommendations from faculty members. Applicants are expected to have an overall GPA of at least 3.5. They must also be on track to have completed at least six courses in philosophy by the time they matriculate in the program. Typically, undergraduate students should apply to the program in their third year.
With one exception (namely, that for a 5000-level course to count toward the M.A., a student must earn in it a grade of B- or higher), the requirements are the same as for the B.A. and M.A. degrees, except that two 5000-level courses are counted for both degrees, and students in the program have the option of taking two additional 5000-level courses in excess of those required for the student’s bachelor's degree.
