Liberal Arts and Exploration (BCLA)

BCLA 1000  Exploring the Liberal Arts  (1 semester hour)  
This course invites students from all interests and backgrounds to explore the breadth and possibilities of a liberal arts education. Grounded in values of curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, students will examine diverse academic pathways while reflecting on their own strengths, passions, and emerging goals. Through interactive sessions that incorporate design thinking, guest speakers from faculty and alumni across disciplines, and collaborative activities, students will engage in a dynamic process of exploration and discovery. As part of an undeclared student learning community, the course emphasizes connection, community-building, and active engagement in a supportive and engaging environment. Students will develop skills in self-awareness and social responsibility while gaining insight to make informed and intentional decisions about their academic journeys.
BCLA 1100  Academic Success Strategies  (1 semester hour)  
This course introduces essential strategies for academic success for the liberal arts across a range of learning contexts. Students will explore effective approaches to time management, note-taking, goal setting, and engagement with academic resources, such as faculty office hours. Emphasis is placed on developing self-awareness as a learner, building self-efficacy, fostering intrinsic motivation, and cultivating habits that support long-term achievement. Through reflection and practical application, students will identify strategies that align with their strengths and adapt them to meet academic and personal goals, creating a strong foundation for success throughout their college experience and beyond.
