Program Details
Department: Mechanical Engineering
Modality: Online
Concentrations: N/A
Semester Hours: 30
Total Years: 1
The accelerated M.S.E. program in Mechanical Engineering is designed for LMU students currently enrolled in the B.S.E. program in Mechanical Engineering (or a similar program) to obtain an M.S.E. degree in Mechanical Engineering in one year after completion of the undergraduate degree. The program prepares students for advanced work in the mechanical engineering profession or graduate study toward advanced Ph.D. programs. The program offers evening courses taught by a mixture of full-time tenure-line faculty and part-time instructors who are leading experts in their areas. Students can tailor their course selections to meet their individual interests and can choose from a variety of courses relevant to various fields, including aerospace, biomedical, robotics and mechatronics, and design and materials.
Program Educational Objectives
The Mechanical Engineering Department has established the following program educational objectives that are consistent with the University’s mission and the program’s student outcomes. During the first 3-5 years after completing the program, graduates will:
- Advance in their professional careers and pursue continuous learning in areas relevant to their long-term goals.
- Advance the engineering discipline through their professional activities such as research, technical leadership, and project management.
- Contribute to professional societies and demonstrate ethical conduct.
Learning Outcomes
The Mechanical Engineering Department has established the following student outcomes that support the program educational objectives. Attainment of these outcomes prepares graduates for advanced levels of professional engineering practice.
- An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to solve engineering (societal) problems.
- An ability to conduct graduate-level research using skills learned in various courses and publish their results in journals and/or conferences.
- An ability to function in teams and communicate effectively.
Accelerated M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering Degree Program Admission Requirements
LMU students who meet the admission requirements for the Mechanical Engineering, M.S.E. degree are eligible to apply for the accelerated M.S.E. degree program.
Admission Requirements
- A completed Online Application (the application fee will be waived)
- Unofficial LMU transcripts
- A personal statement (1-2 pages) that explains how the Mechanical Engineering Master’s Program fits into your career development.
Students must apply for admission consideration before starting their final undergraduate semester at LMU. The final undergraduate semester at LMU will also be the entry term that will be selected on the graduate application.
Program Requirements
Requirements for the Accelerated Master of Science in Engineering Degree, major in Mechanical Engineering (30 semester hours)
The candidate for the Accelerated M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering degree program must satisfy the following requirements:
- One Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering 500/5000-level course (3 semester hours) taken as an undergraduate may count toward the M.S.E. degree. This course can be double counted for the B.S.E. degree and the M.S.E. degree.
- In addition, for an admitted student, an extra Seaver College 500/5000-level course (3 semester hours) may be taken in their senior year that counts towards the M.S.E. degree only. This potentially reduces the total number of additional semester hours after earning the B.S.E. degree to 24.
- All coursework required must be consistent with the graduation requirements for the M.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering program.
